004 - santigold “santogold”

where/when did you first hear it?
a couple of tracks came down with the hype machine podcast feed, mostly mixes of “shove it” and “LES Artistes” got me interested.

what do you like/hate about it?
reading the lyrics to LES Artistes got me VERY interested. i felt the same way about some people, often i think “the emperor has no clothes”. the music itself is very cool, like an extremely accessible M.I.A., sometimes sweet, sometimes sassy. perfect music for all moods. hate? hmm… maybe the album art? not hate, just dislike…

fav and least fav track?
yes 01 L.E.S. Artistes
yes 07 Lights out
yes 09 unstoppable
no NONE

know any trivia or have any random thoughts?
not really, just that generally i really miss the RCRDLBL podcast.

003 - the crystal method “vegas”

where/when did you first hear it?
it would have been mid-1998, probably the filter-trip like i do remix, living in east brisbane or chapel hill… share houses, eating badly, lots of boxing training, squash, and wake-boarding in those couple of years.

what do you like/hate about it?
i love the sort of slow-burn build up in a lot of the tracks, also the signature style of the keyboards, sparse samples and 6 minute tracks that fly by. hate nothing about it.

fav and least fav track?
yes 08 she’s my pusher
yes 06 keep hope alive
yes 04 high roller
no NONE

know any trivia or have any random thoughts?
i (fondly) remember housemates at various places complaining about the volume at which i played this album. i liked that my brother and another close friend were as into it as i was. it is very much a night driving roadtrip album for me, happy memories etc.

002 - OST “lock, stock & two smoking barrels”

where/when did you first hear it?
my house mate in kenmore had it; jo, can you believe this soundtrack introduced me to james brown (other than “i feel good”).

what do you like/hate about it?
i love that it’s like a 70’s mixtape, but feels timeless. the music flows from track to the next and has heaps of swagger. i can take or leave the little bits of dialogue between the tracks, sometimes funny, sometimes annoying.

fav and least fav track?
yes - 03 - James Brown - Boss
yes - 07 - Lewis Taylor & Carleen Anderson - 18 with a bullet
yes - 14 - The Stooges - I wanna be your dog
no - 22 - John Murphy & David Hughes - Zorba the greek

know any trivia or have any random thoughts?
not really, great movie, great soundtrack.
“can everyone STOP getting shot?”

001 - live “mental jewelry”

where/when did you first hear it?
back in about 1994 i was hooked on their later album “throwing copper”, i probably listened to it so much i made myself sick of it. anyway i went looking for more of their stuff and found a friend of my brothers had this album…

what do you like/hate about it?
i like that on re-listen it doesn’t sound really dated, just mid-nighties alternative. live hadn’t developed their “build up, build up, loud, quiet, build up… etc” style yet so the songs styles are varied and kinda catchy.

thinking about the motivation behind the lyrics for ed bugs me. was he struggling with his conversion to buddhism? not his problem, my problem.

fav and least fav track?
yes - 04. brothers unaware
no - 10. good pain

know any trivia or have any random thoughts?
not really, apart from the buddhism thing.
